From year to year, the study of the problem of ‘pharmacy’ drug addiction becomes one of the most topical. Every year, the number of people consuming certain medicines containing psychotropic substances with the purpose of affecting the nervous system is growing. The use for non-medical purposes of medicines with narcotic properties poses a serious risk to human health. The substances contained in these preparations, even with a single use, cause physical and mental dependence. Because of their low cost, ‘pharmacy’ drugs are gaining popularity, and their availability allows the use of such preparations as a substitute for ‘hard’ drugs such as heroin, marijuana, hashish, opium and cocaine. The role of pharmacies in the spread of ‘pharmacy’ drug addiction is great, as only qualified pharmacists have the right to dispense medicines containing psychotropic substances in accordance with the rules for dispensing medicines from pharmaceutical organisations. Despite this, there is a growing number of young people in the country who buy these drugs without a prescription. Special attention should be paid to improving the control system in order to minimise the possibility of illegal sale of such drugs and reduce the risks associated with their non-medical use.
